Barca held by Alaves on Sergi's debut as caretaker coach, Real Madrid, Sevilla win******

MADRID, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Sergi Barjuan's debut as FC Barcelona's caretaker coach ended in disappointment as his side was held to a 1-1 draw by Alaves on Saturday night.。

Memphis Depay put Barca ahead early in the second half, but Luis Rioja's quick reply meant a point each.。

More worrying for Barca fans, although at times their team showed more aggression in attack, much of the display implied that their problems run much deeper than former coach Ronald Koeman who was sacked on Thursday morning.。

Sergi made no real changes to the starting 11, with youngsters Nico Gonzalez and Gavi partnering Sergio Busquets in the midfield.。

Barca looked to take the game to Alaves and for much of the first half they had the visitors pinned deep in their own half but without creating clear chances.。

Memphis opened the scoring in the 49th minute with a brilliant curling shot into the corner of the net, but Alaves were level four minutes later when Luis Rioja and Joselu combined before Rioja dribbled round Ter Stegen to make it 1-1.。

Good work from Gavi then set up Memphis, but this time the striker's shot rattled back off the woodwork and Alaves keeper Antonio Sivera also denied the Dutch striker, as well as making a good block from Philippe Coutinho, who had come into the game before halftime after Kun Aguero appeared to suffer a dizzy spell.。

There was more bad news for Barca when Gerard Pique had to limp off with 20 minutes left to play with Clement Lenglet on to replace him, while Riqui Puig - virtually ostracized by Ronald Koeman - replaced Gavi.。

Barca continued to press, but the fact that Sergi's last two changes were 19-year-old Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, who was making his debut, and 18-year-old Alejandro Balde, shows just how few resources they currently have available.。

Vinicius Jr was the difference as Real Madrid won 2-1 away to Elche. The Brazilian's 22nd minute goal put his side ahead after an even first 45 minutes in which Real Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois was vital in denying Elche strikers Lucas Perez and Lucas Boye.。

Things swung Madrid's way in the second half when Elche midfielder Raul Guti was sent off with half an hour left to play and Vinicius' second goal with 17 minutes left to play looked to have sealed the win.。

A bad mistake from Casemiro allowed Pere Milla to pull a goal back for Elche in the 86th minute to give some emotion to the final moments of the game.。

Sevilla remain second on goal difference behind Real Madrid after their 2-0 home win against Osasuna in a rainy Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.。

Diego Carlos' 40th minute header put Sevilla ahead, while Lucas Ocampos added a second on the hour mark to end Osasuna's unbeaten away record.。

Valencia ended a seven-game run without a win thanks to Hugo Guillamon's 43rd minute goal, after he clipped the ball over Villarreal keeper Geronimo Rulli.。

Villarreal had over 70 percent of the ball, but only managed one shot on target and Carlos Soler's 77th minute penalty assured Valencia all three points in a bad-tempered game. Enditem。

'The higher the better': Why platform heels are back in fashion

Heels are making a serious comeback, with stars leading the post-lockdown trend for towering footwear.

Beyoncé donned a pair of this year's "it" shoe -- six-inch hot pink Versace platform heels -- to an event in August, spurring an internet frenzy over the item.

"People just want to feel happy again," said celebrity stylist Nicole Chavez in a video call, adding that high heels, particularly bright-colored and sparkly ones, are part of the greater "mood-enhancing" fashion seen across the board, from clothing to accessories.

"We're coming out of wearing sneakers and being in comfortable shoes, and so the jump from sneakers to stilettos is a big one," Chavez said. "I feel like the platform, because it is more comfortable, is a great alternative.

"Right now, it's platform everything. The higher, the chunkier, the better."

But women aren't the only ones wearing platforms. Rapper and singer Lil Nas X often wears them with his flamboyant outfits, while Billy Porter paired his sparkling Richard Quinn gown with statement platform boots at The Fashion Awards. "Saturday Night Live" star Bowen Yang spiced up a more traditional facing black suit at the Emmys with silver ones by Brooklyn based Syro, which brands itself as "femme footwear 4 everyone."

Syro co-founder Shaobo Han says that the shoes have become a tool for self-expression as people increasingly challenge and blur gender binaries.

"Being able to display that femininity (on the street) without feeling ashamed is powerful," Han explained.

A sign of the times

The popularity of platforms has risen and fallen throughout history. Ancient platforms existed as far back as 6th century BCE. Over time they evolved, encompassing East Asian wooden styles worn by Manchu women during the Qing dynasty and the lavishly patterned geometric ones of the 16th century, known as "chopines."

Noblewomen in southern Europe would wear these "wildly high" platforms, increasing the length of the textiles, according to Elizabeth Hemmelseck, the director and senior curator of the BATA Shoe Museum in Toronto. One recorded pair was as high as twenty inches.

The platform heel -- which combined both a block sole and heel -- is believed to have emerged in 17th century Persia. “The style was worn by Persian horseback riders," said Hemmelseck.

Once the high heel was developed, they fell into obscurity before coming back into fashion during the 1930s, 1970s and late 1990s and 2000s. Interest in platforms seems to grow during times of "social unrest and economic stress," Hemmelseck observed.

"Why (is it that) during the Great Depression the shoes go bananas?" she asked. "Why during the oil crisis and the economic woes of the '70s (are) our shoes going crazy again? Is there some commonality?"

It's a trend that technology company IBM researched in 2011 with a study exploring why heels go higher during these challenging periods, as well as during later crises like the dot-com bubble bursting in the late '90s.

Beyond being a form of escapism, however, platforms again rose in popularity in the 1930s due to pragmatism, Hemmelseck speculated. Many women at the time couldn't afford a luxurious wardrobe, so investing in an expensive platform heel that could be worn with many outfits offered a way to participate in fashion trends through a "single outrageous accessory," she said.

In the 1970s, the platform heel once again saw a resurgence, with the likes of David Bowie and John Travolta storming the stage with sky-high versions. On stars like Bowie, Travolta and Elton John, the shoes presented "larger questions about the (gender) binary," Hemmelseck added.

Men during this period were "talking about this being a revival of (French King) Louis XIV," who was known for his powerful, opulent wardrobe. "Can't we Western men shake off this boring uniform of authority, the business suit and begin to connect with our innate masculinity through how we dress?"

Platform heels have also developed different connotations over time -- and in some cases symbolize sex work. Over time, it evolved into the clear Lucite platforms of the '90s worn by strippers and pole-dancers, thanks to brands such as Pleaser, which then trickled into the mainstream in the 2000s as stars adopted them into fashion.

As for the platform heels favored at red carpet events this year, Hemmelsack said the style plays off this eroticism as well as the surge in '90s nostalgia.

Beyond fashion

In 2021, "dopamine dressing" has become a widely used term in fashion, characterizing the desire for bolder, brighter, sexier outfits.

Some of Syro's creations -- such as ostentatious red platforms and the metallic silver ones worn by Yang -- have coincided with this trend, selling out almost immediately to the surprise of co-founders Han and Henry Bae.

"People want to feel powerful and (be) powerful. That's something I think platforms really make all of us feel. The moment you put them on, the additional five-inch height that you automatically get, you just start to suddenly see the world differently," they said.

"Living our life as authentically and as joyfully is a protest against the repression that we've been feeling."

The danger of the internet turning money into a game

“A friend of mine came up with a variant on [Occam’s razor, which is] that the most ironic outcome is the most likely one,” Elon Musk told fellow billionaire Jack Dorsey and Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood during a virtual Bitcoin conference in July. Musk, who had been delivering a relatively sober perspective on blockchain technologies, seemed delighted that the conversation had turned to Dogecoin, the satirical cryptocurrency devoted to memes and dogs.

“And then I have a variant on that, which is the most entertaining outcome is the most likely one,” he continued. “If that is true, then the most ironic and entertaining outcome would be that the cryptocurrency [Dogecoin] that was started as a joke to make fun of cryptocurrencies ends up being the lead cryptocurrency.” Musk laughed.

Within minutes, Musk’s to-the-moon energy had spread to Telegram, TikTok, and Reddit. Inspired by Musk’s remarks, rapper Busta Rhymes announced to his 3.8 million Twitter followers that he was now “sold on Bitcoin.” In no time, the cool kids in Discord’s trading forums were labeling Doge a “pleb coin,” implying that regular people were flooding into it and fueling speculation (as of mid-August, it’s up 9,222% year over year).

The year 2021 will be remembered as the moment when financial culture and internet culture converged, leading to investment bubbles in everything from meme stocks to tokenized collectibles. But cryptocurrency trading, a largely unregulated casino, arguably represents the purest synthesis yet of personal finance and online social status. On TikTok, for example, one of the more popular formats involves a bro offering investment tips, talking-head style, while displaying the value of his crypto portfolio behind him; a billion or trillion of anything, apparently, is good for both the ego and the algorithm. And everyone wants in. In the past 12 months, upwards of 5,000 new crypto coins have launched. By August, SEC chair Gary Gensler was sounding the regulatory alarm and asking Congress to step in.

While lawmakers weigh their options, the desire for instant wealth—and the attendant boost in social currency for anyone who got in early and gets out before the inevitable “rug pull”—is overwhelming any warning cries. The vast majority of the amateur investors buying up Dogecoin will lose money, but they’ve gained a chance to burnish their credentials as card-carrying members of an internet tribe led by Musk, who can afford to treat it all like a joke. (Dorsey, a Bitcoin whale, has his own fan base.) “This is much more about a kind of identity formation than it is [about] anything to do with economic forces or motivations,” says Bill Maurer, director of the Institute for Money, Technology, and Financial Inclusion.

(Institute for Money, Technology, and Financial Inclusion)主任比尔•毛雷尔(Bill Maurer)表示。

This pursuit of likes via penny stock altcoins may sound trivial. But it’s a symptom of broader malaise. Upward economic mobility has been declining in the U.S. since 1980, meaning that millennials and subsequent generations have no memory of good times. Warned that they will get wiped out, younger crypto investors respond with a shrug. There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain.

All the while, more and more economic activity is concentrating in attention-economy platforms that Silicon Valley controls. What could possibly go wrong?

Money and status have always been linked, but the gamification of our financial lives didn’t begin in earnest until the 1980s, when Discover Financial, then owned by Sears, introduced a cash-back program tied to its credit card. Soon after, banks and airlines started to team up to tie personal spending to earning miles, which could be redeemed for perks like airport lounge access, encouraging consumers to optimize themselves and their wallets. The more you spend, the higher-class you become! Household debt be damned.

After the 2008 financial crisis, fintech startups, Bitcoin, and gamification ploys all blossomed in libertarian-leaning Silicon Valley, nudging people to see themselves as owners who could transform the system that burned them. The stock-trading app Robinhood, which doles out free shares to new users and lowers the barrier for trading crypto and risky options, represents all these trends in one.

With Robinhood, at least, most users are gambling (er, investing) with their fun money—$20 here, $50 there—in order to create fodder for group texts and snaps. When it comes to maximizing social influence and wealth, the stakes are far higher for professional digital content creators, a group that now numbers more than 2 million. They are playing what tech analyst Packy McCormick, author of email newsletter Not Boring, calls “the great online game,” in which social media is where you make your moves and crypto is how you keep score. Altcoin cryptocurrencies, in particular, offer creators a shot at the kind of equity-based wealth that social platforms have denied them.

“They don’t want the constant churn of creating content to be their only revenue stream,” Josh Constine, principal investor for the venture firm SignalFire, says of these vloggers, podcasters, and streamers. The most successful of these folks, he says, will build “a sort of creator pension out of equity stakes” in startups and altcoins aligned with their audiences.

Some tech-world philosophers believe that the great online game will soon be something that everyone plays. For a taste of this future, witness the sudden rise of Axie Infinity, a Pokémon-style game that compensates winners with its own Smooth Love Potion cryptocurrency and is attracting players by the millions. In countries like the Philippines, playing Axie is more lucrative than many traditional jobs—at least for now. “Some people who were previously making $5 per day now make $20 [playing Axie],” McCormick wrote breathlessly in a recent newsletter. Axie’s founders, meanwhile, are on track to make $1.1 billion by the end of the year.

“The sort of utopian song that goes into [these projects] is about, how do we share the fruits of our commercial activities in a way that rewards users, [but it’s] driven by a self-interest to get users to adopt stuff faster,” says Lex Sokolin, head economist for the blockchain company ConsenSys. “But it’s sitting on top of this hypercapitalist infrastructure. And the infrastructure is owned by billionaires.”

Crypto’s boom can be credited, in part, to social media softening its edges. Savvy developers have learned to mint coins that are likable, shareable, sometimes laughable. Clever promoters like Musk continue to be the biggest winners. Tactical middlemen benefit by collecting exorbitant fees for trading, voting on protocol governance, and other forms of community participation. And the plebs?

What’s happening in money culture right now looks something like this: The masses, frustrated by rigid societal inequality and a lack of economic opportunity, are playing whatever new lottery comes along. They invest their social media selves in lottery communities, and they put their savings in scratch tickets. The price to play is expensive, the rules are designed for them to lose—and they do. According to research firm Chain alysis, investors lost roughly $2.7 billion to investment scams in 2020. All signs point toward even more instances of fraud in 2021. Do your own research, crypto veterans admonish.

“The price of this token can never go down . . . it’s really cool,” the creator of a coin called Surge said in a YouTube interview in August. Thousands of viewers reveled in the hype. “I just bought 367 million [Surge coins] for just 5 bucks!” one wrote in the comments. “This is lightning in a bottle!!!”

We’re almost surely in a bubble. Or rather, we’re in the midst of an ever-rotating cast of mini-bubbles. None may be big enough on its own to create a financial panic. But together, they reveal the deep and increasingly dangerous flaws in our traditional institutions. It would be relatively easy for regulators to devote more resources to policing cryptocurrency. Harder, but far more important, will be rebuilding trust by making economic growth—and the financial establishment that serves as its gatekeeper—accessible to all.
